What is UPSC?
Let us tell you that UPSC is an organisation working for the recruitment of eligible employees for the posts of Level A and Level B of the Central Government in the country, whose full name is “Union Public Service Commission” in Hindi and “Union Public Service Commission” in English. UPSC is one of the most prestigious, popular and independent working organisations of the country.
History of UPSC?
When India was ruled by the British Government, a Royal Civil Service Royal Commission was established in 1923 under the chairmanship of Lord Lee of Fareham. The commission issued a report to the British government in 1924, in which it was proposed that 40% of the British, 40% of the Indians in the civil service and 20% of the people who are employed in the provincial services of India should be promoted and recruited in the civil service. .
Accepting the proposal of the report, the British government established the UPSC on 1 October 1926, which we know today as the Union Public Service Commission. Presently the headquarter of UPSC is in Delhi. The head of UPSC is the commission executive. Presently the head of UPSC “Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Kumar Joshi ji”. UPSC works under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions of the Central Government.

UPSC Civil Services Examination :-
UPSC Civil Services Examination also known as Civil Services Examination is one of the toughest examinations in the country. On an average 9,00,000 to 10,00,000 candidates from across the country apply for the UPSC Civil Services Exam every year. Out of which the number of candidates appearing in the preliminary examination is approximately 5,50,000. The selection process of UPSC Civil Services exam is completed in two stages.
Phase 1 (Preliminary Examination):- Preliminary Examination (Preliminary Examination) is conducted every year in June. And the result of the preliminary examination is declared in August.
Phase 2 (Mains Exam) :- The Mains exam is conducted every year in October. The results are declared in January.
Personality Test (Interview) – Successful candidates in both the above examinations are called for an interview which is conducted in March. After which the list of successful candidates final result is declared in the month of May of the year.
Finally the training program of the selected candidates starts from the month of September. The duration of training is of 2 years, after completion of which the candidates are appointed for the posts.
Eligibility for Civil Services Exam :-
If you want to apply for UPSC Civil Services Exam you must have the following qualifications –
- Candidates for Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Indian Foreign Service must be citizens of India.
- To apply for other services of UPSC, a candidate must possess the following qualifications –
- Candidate must be a citizen of India.
- If the candidate is a citizen of Nepal, Bhutan then they can also apply for UPSC Civil Services Exam.
- If the candidate came to India before 1st January 1962 and was residing in the country as a Tibetan refugee.
- Candidates who have migrated to India from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam and are residing in the country as a refugee can also apply for UPSC Civil Services Examination. can.
Educational Qualification for UPSC:-
All the candidates applying for the Civil Services Examination must possess any one of the following educational qualifications –
- Graduation degree in any stream obtained from a Central, State or a Deemed University of the country
- Degree obtained by correspondence or distance education through distance
- Graduation degree in any stream obtained from any one of the Open University in the country
- Should possess a qualification recognized by the Government of India as equivalent to any one of the above
- Candidates who have passed the final examination of MBBS degree but not yet completed internship are eligible to take the exam.
- Candidates who have qualified the final examination of ICAI, ICSI and ICWAI are eligible to appear in the examination.
- Even if the candidate has obtained a degree from a private university, he/she is eligible to appear in the examination.
- Candidates having a degree from any foreign university recognized by the Association of Indian Universities are eligible to appear in the examination.
Age Limit for UPSC :-
- The age limit for general category candidates is between 21 to 32 years.
- The age limit for Other Backward Classes (OBC) is 35 years.
- The age limit for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) is 37 years.
- The age limit for defence service personnel is 40 years.
- The age limit for PWD (Divyang) candidates is 37 years.
- The age limit is 32 years for those who have completed five years of military service under ECO/SSCO
- The age limit for permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 is 32 years.
- For candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, the age limit will be applicable as for the general candidates.
Number of attempts:
- Opportunities to appear in the exam for general category candidates – 6 times
- Opportunities to appear in the exam for OBC category candidates – 9 times
- Opportunities to appear in the examination for SC/ST category candidates – up to the age of 37 years of the candidate
Civil Services Examination Pattern :-
There are nine papers in the Civil Services Main written examination. Each paper is of 3 hours duration. We have explained about the papers in detail below –
