How to test a submitted Model Approval for certification?
To file for a Legal Metrology Model Approval application for your weights or measurement product, you must apply for the certification with the Legal Metrology Department (LMD). The Model Approval applicant must file the application per the LMD’s directions. Also, the model must undergo the designed testing procedure to ascertain its boasted calibrations.

The LM Model’s design must be competent to produce highly calibrated, precise weights and measures before the businessmen sell or distribute them in the market. In this article, we have accordingly detailed the content of a Model Approval certification application and its applied testing procedure.
What does a Model Approval application contain?
The application of Model Approval for measurement instruments must be made to the Director of the LMD (Legal Metrology Department), and the content of the approval application must contain the following details:
Model Approval Applicant Details
The Approval application must contain the complete details of the applicant, such as:
- Proof of Name and Date of Birth
- Proof of Address
To-be-Approved Model Description
The Approval application must describe the weights and measures unit for which the Model Approval certificate is sought, such as:
- Weights and measures unit’s class
- Industrial Usage of the approved model
- Metrological details of the weights and measures model
- Technical characteristics & qualities of weights and measures model
- Brand of the weights and measures model
- Type of the weights and measures model
Model Testing Procedure
The Approval Application must contain a detailed description of the test procedure. This procedure will authenticate the calibration of the weights and measures model instrument.

Model Approval Certification Fee
The Approval Application must pay the required fee per the LMD and government regulations.
Model Construction Details
The Approval Application must submit two copies of the sketch and drawing of the Model’s general arrangements and its installation. The sketch must include the construction details of weights and measures to the LMD department.
Application Attachments
The Model applicant must submit at least two copies of the following documents along with the Model Approval application:
- Principle of Construction
- Method of Operation
- Details of the Safety devices employed to prevent the fraudulent or inaccurate operation
- Venue of the affixation of verification stamp or seal
- General arrangements related to the weights and measures
- Installation drawings, including detailed installation instruction
- Photographs of the model
- Actual circuit diagram of the model
- User manual
- Printed pamphlet
- Any other relevant information
Information about any Supplementaries
If the model applicant is using any supplement devices along with the weight or measure instrument, then he or she must provide the information about such supplement devices.

Standard Testing procedure for the Model Approval Certificate
When an approval applicant submits the model to the LMD (Legal Metrology Department), the model needs to go for an assessment to check its competence for the market. So, the Authority has designed tests in that specific manner. Also, the applicant must accordingly prepare the test procedures for anyone the following purposes:
- Firstly, ascertaining the model competence if it conforms to the standard established by the Act or any International Organisation
- Secondly, assessing the ability of the model in maintaining accuracy and technical characteristics
- Also, determining the performance of the approved model under varied conditions
- Consequently, determining the metrological and technical aspects of the model usage
- Afterwards, ascertaining the model observance for the declarations as per the mandatory Legal Metrology laws
- Lastly, assessing the place of the instrument sealing as suggested by the model manufacturer if sufficient to prevent its fraudulent use
- Finally, determining the approved model’s behavior
The model applicant must test every approved model as per the Director of the LMD.
