How the manufacturing process of steel forging works?
By accepting the fact that steel is an important asset in industrial applications, companies associated with casting and steel forgings in India are working on steel strength. Their main motive behind enhancing the steel strength is to make it stronger to handle the structure under all circumstances. Steel forging is the best method to enhance the strength.
What is a steel forging?
When the steel scrap is reached at the foundry for forging process, the workforce uses carbon and iron to get the final result. During the process, the qualified workforce performs a series of compression under higher pressure.
Steel becomes ductile and malleable when it is heated in forging temperature. This steel can be moulded to a shape of the manufacturer’s choice by applying pressure. If a proper processing method is used, this allows a bullet of steel to be shaped permanently without cracking, due to its plasticity nature.
Requirements one needs to fulfill before they can forge steel
There are some requirements one needs to cover before the steel forging process can begin. These requirements include:-
- Induction heating system
- Forge furnace
- Forge oven to heat the steel to forging temperature
The entire process of forging results in the formation of metallurgical re-crystallization and grain refinement. This strengthens the resultant forged steel product, especially when it comes to its toughness. Steel forging is divided into 3 categories depending on the forming temperature. These categories are:-
-
Hot forging of steel
The forging temperature is 950 to 1250 degrees Celsius, which is above the crystallization temperature. This results in good formability and requires low forming forces.
-
Warm Forging of Steel
The forging temperature is between 750 to 950 degrees Celsius. This leads to limited formability and requires higher forming forces than hot forging.
-
Cold Forging of steel
The forging temperature is at room condition with it self-heating up to 150 degrees Celsius. It leads to low formability and requires very high forming forces.
Properties of forged steel
The main properties of forged steel are:-
- The steel that is formed using this processing has superb strength, robustness, and top-notch durability.
- They are anisotropic in nature.
- They are meticulous and measured.
Categories of forged steel
There are two categories of forged steel. These are:-
-
Open Die Forging
In this type of forging, the metal piece goes through a deformation between multiple dies that do not enclose the material entirely.
-
Closed Die Forging
In this type of forging, the metal is pressed between two dies which comprises of the precut profile of the desired shape.
Applications of forged steel
This kind of steel is used in many industries due to the toughness as well as the tensile strength of this product. Some of these industries are:-
- Oil and gas industry
- Aircraft and ship industry
- Automobile industry
- General Industry
- Agricultural Machinery
- Hand tools and hardware
Due to the very tough properties of this kind of steel, there are hundreds of Steel forgings India companies which are forging steel in India and supplying them to various industries in both the public and the private sector. One needs to be careful while forging steel though as one cannot handle the type of temperature that the steel is subjected to during the process.
