The dayara Bugyal trek is said to be the home of the goddess Nanda Devi. According to legend, Nanda Devi was the daughter of the Himalayan king Himavan and his wife Mena. She was married to the god Shiva, and they had two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Nanda Devi is said to have been a great beauty, and her husband was very jealous of her. One day, while she was bathing in a lake, Shiva saw her and was so enraged that he killed her. Her body was said to have been transformed into a mountain, and her sons were said to have become the stars of the constellation Orion.
